Marketing agencies love to keep you addicted
Do you ever have that feeling of being overwhelmed by all the information coming in from the media?
“Information is a source of learning. But unless it is organized, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making, it is a burden, not a benefit.”
— William Pollard
I’m overwhelmed. I’m currently visiting my parents at home and the radio is switched on almost the whole day, everywhere
- in the house.
- In the kitchen.
- In the bathroom.
- In the car.
- And the TV is running next to it too.
I’m not used to that because I never listen to the radio, and if I want to listen to some music, I would turn on my playlist on Spotify without ads.
All that information and noise comes in the whole time: ads, news, weather every half an hour, and other things they talk about.
So many people are listening to the radio the whole day at work and I get it if some people say they are more productive with music. But the radio is not just music.
I can’t concentrate on writing this right now, because the radio keeps me from thinking.
Background Noise
We cannot hear our thoughts when listening to the radio the whole time.
We hear the background noise of the radio, the TV, and other media. It distracts us from the real world and our own problems because all we hear are negative news or problems from all over the world every half an hour and then we hear what we can buy to make us happier or more beautiful.
It’s distracting.
We hear the same things every day on the radio because there is nothing new in that half an hour of music and ads.
It’s always the same news, the same weather, the same traffic jams, the same ads, and the same music.
Every day is the same. Every day we have that background noise.
Why do people keep it on? Because they have the fear of missing out syndrome which is the same as the people have that are addicted to social media. If they don’t listen or if they are not online, they would miss something.
You don’t!
“Replacing just a few key negative habits with a few positive habits can easily be the difference between being mostly unhappy and being happy almost all of the time.”
— Tynan
Remove The Habit
This habit of listening to the radio turned into being on social media the whole day. Else you will miss out on what Selena Gomez is doing right now.
You don’t have to be up to date the whole time! The same news will be there in a few hours.
We all have to be more conscious of the information we want to consume. Too much information coming in is not good for us and our thoughts. Our brain thinks those are our thoughts and we get controlled by the media.
We all want our own thoughts and opinions, and you don’t want to get influenced, right? So stop consuming so much media like the radio, TV, ads, newspaper, or social media!
Instead, take a look at what information you are consuming the whole day.
- What does it do to you?
- Is it good or bad?
- What kind of information do you actually want to consume?
Remove, replace, or make a good habit instead of consuming the media.
- Turn off the information incoming while at home
- Switch to an audiobook or a quiz show instead of the news
- Listen to a podcast on your way to work or at breakfast instead of reading the newspaper
- Control your incoming information by decreasing it
You are in control of your environment hence you’re in control of how much you consume.
Just Turn Off The F*cking Radio!
You can control what information you take in. Turn off the radio, turn off the TV during the advertisement break, and install an ad blocker on all your devices.
If you want to be a creator or successful at your job, you have to remove input and increase output.
Produce, write, plan, and be creative instead of watching the advertisement and buying the next thing “that will make you beautiful and young”.
Just try it out to switch off the devices and see how relaxing life can be!
Enjoy life without noise! Enjoy life with your loved ones and things that are actually important to you!
“When you’re a kid, you lay in the grass and watch the clouds going over, and you literally don’t have a thought in your mind. It’s purely meditation, and we lose that.”
— Dick Van Dyke
