Small, consistent actions for lasting positivity
In our negative world, positivity is hard to find if you don’t have your mind set on it.
Training your brain to see more positivity is easier than you think.
Remember:
You cannot change the negativity in the world, but you can change your view. Accept the things you can’t change, and change the ones you can!
Benjamin P. Hardy talks a lot about the changes you have to make to become the future self you want to be. That means you need to let go of 80% of your current life because only 20% is beneficial for staying with your future self.
The habits and decisions that made you who you are today are not the ones that are helping you get to your future self.
In the last year, I’ve been changing my mindset to be more positive because I’m surrounded by a culture that likes to complain.
My change started with small daily habits I do consistently. My perspective changed, and I realized other things I needed to change.
With these 3 strategies, I re-programmed my brain, and you can do too:
1: Surround Yourself With Positive People
Positive people are full of energy, which can inspire and uplift you. Their mindset is positive and they see the world always from its best side.
Get infected by this positivity.
And as harsh as it may sound: let go of negative people.
It could be your best friend who sees the devil in everyone. You cannot change them, but you can let them affect you less by decreasing the time spent together.
Instead, you find people lifting you, believing in you, and helping you improve and grow.
You have to make hard decisions to move on.
You cannot change the attitude of others. You can change the people you surround yourself with.
If you are stuck with the same people in the same surrounding, maybe think about moving away.
Find yourself new locations and new people!
The culture I’m living in is full of complainers. Their lives are so comfortable that nothing interesting happens, so they complain.
I like where I’m living so I changed my perspective. I let them complain, and I will be as kind and friendly as possible to everyone around me. Eventually, it comes back to me.
“We are what we see. We are products of our surroundings.”
— Amber Valletta
2: Practice Positive Self-Talk
A big part of changing your mindset is replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. This takes a daily commitment to practice positive self-talk.
Add it to your morning routine to say a few positive affirmations to yourself in front of the mirror.
Google some affirmations and choose some that speak to you personally.
Since I’ve added this habit to my morning routine I saw a big difference in my daily positivity because the first things I’m telling myself every day are positive, motivating.
Here are a few of mine as an example:
- “I’m strong.”
- “I’m healthy.”
- “I will be wealthy.”
- “I trust the universe.”
I get into the superhero position and confidently tell myself my affirmations.
It may seem silly at first, but trust me, they help you re-program your consciousness.
Another small daily habit to add is keeping a gratitude journal.
At the end of each day, we usually remember the bad things happening to us because we are analyzing and overthinking them.
Now think of 3 things you are grateful for today (and for bonus points: write them down).
You are re-programming your mind to remember positive things every day.
You will realize how many beautiful things and people you have in your life.
“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.”
— Eckhart Tolle
3: Engage in Activities That Bring You Joy
With our busy lives, we usually forget to do activities that bring us joy. We have to be efficient, and we always have a lot to do.
Stop for a minute every week to do something you enjoy!
Your choice! But not just watching TV for a few hours.
It could be:
- Going to brunch with friends
- Going for a hike
- Doing a picnic
- Going swimming
- Going to a museum
- …
There are so many great things you can do to boost your mood!
As kids, we did whatever looked fun, but as adults, we are stuck in our routines and forget to have fun too!
Make it a weekly habit to meet with friends or engage in some hobby. That’s what Saturdays and Sundays are for.
It was hard for me to let go and have fun because I usually felt guilty afterward for not being productive.
But by doing something fun every weekend, like going for longer walks, visiting a museum, or going swimming, I add more joy to my life, and it motivates me for the next week.
“By changing our mindset and habits, we can actually dramatically change the course of life, improve intelligence, productivity, improve the quality of our lives, and improve every single education and business outcome.”
— Shawn Achor
Conclusion
Daily habits of positivity will change your mindset really fast. You will see!
The key is that it becomes a consistent habit.
Don’t be overwhelmed by the 3 strategies: just start with one!
You can start by thinking of 3 things you are grateful for while brushing your teeth at night.
Doing 1 small thing consistently every day is more important than doing all of them inconsistently.
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
— Jim Rohn
